Founded in 1891, Cambuslang Lawn Tennis Club has been at the heart of tennis in the local community for well over a century. From its earliest days, the club has combined competitive success with a welcoming atmosphere, creating a proud tradition that continues today.

The club held its first Annual General Meeting in May 1892, with its first clubhouse opening later that year. By 1895, Cambuslang had affiliated with the newly formed Scottish Lawn Tennis Association, becoming part of the growing organised tennis movement in Scotland.

Competition quickly became an important part of club life. Early friendly matches were played against neighbouring clubs including Mount Vernon, Cathcart, Newlands and Queen’s Park, laying the foundations for long-standing rivalries and friendships across the West of Scotland. By 1908, both the men’s and ladies’ teams were competing in league tennis, demonstrating the club’s ambition from its earliest years.

Success soon followed. Cambuslang claimed its first major trophy, the Calcutta Cup, in 1912, marking the beginning of a proud competitive history that has continued through every generation.

Like many sporting clubs, Cambuslang’s activities were interrupted by the First World War. Tennis was suspended while many members served in the armed forces, and the club sadly lost two members during the conflict. When league tennis resumed after the war, Cambuslang returned stronger than ever, winning the Clydesdale Cup in 1921 before lifting the same trophy again in 1966, 1968 and 1975.

Throughout the twentieth century, the club enjoyed considerable success in West of Scotland tennis. The ladies’ teams were particularly impressive, winning Division One titles in 1968 and 1971, while also reaching several West Section and Scottish Cup finals during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. Their achievements established Cambuslang as one of the region’s leading tennis clubs.

Alongside competitive success, Cambuslang became recognised for developing young players. Junior coaching flourished through the dedication of volunteers and coaches, with Elva Allan playing a leading role in introducing hundreds of children to tennis through the Grass Roots programme and promoting the development of short tennis across the West of Scotland.

The club entered a new era during the 1990s with significant investment in its facilities. Under the leadership of President Dan Lavery, new artificial grass courts were installed in 1992, providing modern playing surfaces for members of all ages and abilities.

This was followed by one of the most significant milestones in the club’s history: the construction of a brand new clubhouse. Completed in 1995–96, the project was made possible through Lottery funding, making Cambuslang one of the first tennis clubs in Scotland to benefit from this support. The clubhouse transformed the club’s facilities and remains at the heart of club life today.

More than 130 years after it was founded, Cambuslang Lawn Tennis Club continues to build on its proud heritage. From league champions and trophy winners to generations of junior players discovering the game for the first time, the club has always been about bringing people together through tennis. Today, that same spirit remains at the centre of everything we do as we continue to welcome new members and look forward to the future.
